Historical Milestones

1965 – First Scientific Research Paper Written
Extensive research was conducted by Michael W. Dixon as an exercise of self-education and discovery that resulted in writing “The Transformation of Food,” which charted the course food takes from ingestion, through intestinal breakdown and uptake, to cellular utilization.  Discovered how cells produce energy, only to find out later that it had already been discovered by Hans A. Krebs, first proposed in 1937, and for which he won a Nobel Prize in 1953.  The Krebs Cycle (aka citric acid cycle) is the key metabolic sequential pathway of the chemical conversion of nutrients (carbohydrates, fats and proteins), with the assistance of enzymes, vitamins and minerals, in the presence of oxygen, into carbon dioxide and water to generate useable cellular energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).  Albert Szent-Gyorgyi contributed to the Krebs Cycle by charting its components and reactions within the mitochondria organelle (the cell’s power plant) to produce the energy molecule ATP.  Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, who is also credited with discovering vitamin C, won a Nobel Prize in Physiology in 1937.  Later, Michael W. Dixon demonstrated how the essential mineral magnesium (Mg) naturally bonds with ATP to form the complete energy complex MgATP.

1968 – Orthomolecular Research Begins
In 1968 a quest began by independent orthomolecular biochemistry researcher Michael W. Dixon to try and find an orthomolecular substance that could control stress-induced premature ventricular contractions (PVC’s), a common heartbeat arrhythmia induced by stress (absent an organic cause).  After a couple of decades of research into every possible nutrient, and combination of nutrients, it was determined that the essential mineral magnesium (Mg) held the most promise.  The problem encountered with magnesium was that because of its inherent hydrophilic nature, which caused it to attract and hold water in the GI tract, it tended to produce a laxative effect when magnesium was taken orally in any meaningful quantity, regardless of the supplement type consumed.  Then the quest turned to how to overcome magnesium’s hydrophilic nature.

This was the beginning of what eventually evolved into the development of Potentiated Magnesium (pMg), and some remarkable discoveries about its beneficial impact on the human cardiovascular system.

1970-1972 – The Early Pioneers of Nutrition
Because of his knowledge of nutrients, Michael W. Dixon was hired as a manager of a health food store in Downey, CA owned by American Health Industries, which operated a chain of health food stores throughout Southern California.  It was here, through the store’s extensive library on nutrients and health, that Michael W. Dixon became familiar with the early pioneers in the study of nutrients and their impact on health, as epitomized by Linus Pauling.

1973 – Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine
Began contributions to the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine (founded 1973 in California) for their orthomolecular research.  After Linus Pauling’s death at age 93 (in 1994), the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine moved (in 1996) to Oregon State University and was re-named the Linus Pauling Institute.  Michael W. Dixon greatly admired Linus Pauling, and based his orthomolecular research on the “The Nature of the Chemical Bond” and “General Chemistry” textbooks written by Linus Pauling, expanding the work done by Linus Pauling that involved ionic bonding of minerals (chemical bonds between atoms in mineral molecules).  Coincidentally, Linus Pauling married a woman named Miller, and Michael W. Dixon married a woman named Miller.  In 1954 Linus Pauling received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and in 1962 received the Nobel Peace Prize.  Linus Pauling remains the only person in history to have received two unshared Nobel Prizes.

1968-1988 – Orthomolecular Research Continues
The documentation of the volume of work surrounding the research into how nutrients function in the human body, and how the human body works, eventually resulted in The BodyBook Trilogy, a three volume reference treatise of the human body that encompasses the body’s physiology, nutrition, and conditions (including an encyclopedic lexicon).  Each volume contained about 1,000 pages.

1996 – Early Paper About A Newly Developed Form of Magnesium

As a matter of historical interest, “There Is A Magic Bullet After All” which documents the early research and development of what eventually became Potentiated Magnesium, is fascinating reading and may be published online sometime in the future.

1996 – Magnesium’s Hydrophilic Nature Overcome
After decades of R&D, a new type of orthomolecular chemical bond was developed that basically was an extension of the nature of the chemical bond work conducted by Linus Pauling.  This new type of chemical bond is basically a way of surrounding the magnesium molecules with a different nutrient, then surrounding it again with a third nutrient, to form a previously unknown compound coordination complex.  The compound complex process produced a sort of supercharged synergy between the ingredients that fully activated the magnesium and brought it to its full potential, the potential it probably always had but went unrecognized simply because not enough could be ingested in meaningful quantities without it producing magnesium’s usual laxative effect.

1996- 1997– Potentiated Magnesium Fully Developed

1997 – First Series of Potentiated Magnesium Patents Applied For

1998 – First U.S. Patent Issued For Potentiated Magnesium
By 1998 the first of several patents was issued for this new orthomolecular substance, with patents eventually being issued in the U.S., Canada, Japan, China, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.  The patents are unique in that they not only cover the proprietary formulation and the new Compound Complex process, they also encompass what the fully activated magnesium actually does in the human body – and what it does is quite extraordinary.  (Reference: U.S. Patent 5,849,337 titled: “Method of Enhancing Magnesium Absorption…”)

1998 – Multiple Human Research Studies Begin
Eventually, more than 10 years of human research studies with the new form of advanced orthomolecular magnesium demonstrated that it could be taken in quantities up to 3,000 mg of elemental magnesium per day for more than a year, and 2,000 mg of elemental magnesium per day for more than 10 years, without producing a laxative effect or any other deleterious side effect.  More than 30 people were involved in the research studies, involving both males and females, with ages in every decade of life that ranged from teens to those in their 90’s.
